
Terminology Search
What Does It Do?
The Metadata tool provides a rapid utility to allow you to quickly look-up any CDISC/NCI controlled value in seconds.
What Do You Need?

Any version of the CDISC/NCI Controlled Terminology document.

A blank Microsoft Excel file.
Guide

Open Microsoft Excel.

Navigate to the Metadata ribbon.

​Locate the Terminology section of the ribbon.

Click the Search button in the Terminology section.

A prompt will appear.

Select either SDTM or ADaM from the Category drop down list and then the controlled terminology versions will auto-populate.

*TIP* if the user is unsure which Category to select, simply select ADaM and this will ensure the search process checks both the SDTM and ADaM controlled terminology documents.

Click OK to continue, and a terminology search window will appear.

The user can now look-up any code list by placing the code list name or code list code in the search field.

If the code list was found, the terminology search window will update displaying all the applicable code list metadata.

*TIP* If required the user can Filter the results by the value itself, the value label or even the value code.

This process can be run multiple times, it does NOT impact any workbook open.

IMPORTANT: If a code list entered does not exist, a prompt will appear informing the user.

The user can choose to manually copy the table, in full or in part.

Alternatively the user can Export the contents directly into an Excel workbook. To Export the code list information to an existing Excel template click the Export button under the variable level table.

A prompt will appear.

Assuming the user wants to export the code list (e.g., the AESEV code list) to an existing worksheet, the Existing Worksheet option as selected.

Then select the name of the worksheet from the Existing Worksheet drop down list, and the code list information will be exported to, e.g., CT.

IMPORTANT: The Worksheet Name field has no impact here and is disabled when the Existing Worksheet option is selected.

Click to OK to begin the export process.

Once exported, navigate to the worksheet, and update the domain and or variable columns, e.g., domain=AE and variable=AESEV.

The chosen code list has been successfully exported onto the worksheet.

The process can be re-run again if required with no impact to previously exported code lists.
